Fortune was originally created by the Atlantic Monthly Company in 1929. The magazine was initially marketed as “The Ideal Super-Class Magazine,” which vividly portrayed the most distinguished firms and persons of the economic times. Since its launch, Fortune was published monthly, and in 1978 began to be published biweekly. As of 2018, Fortune magazine is being published 14 times a year.

Who Founded Fortune?

American magazine magnate Henry Robinson Luce founded Fortune magazine after the Great Depression and the death of his Yale classmate, Briton Hadden. Previous to Fortune magazine, Henry Robinson Luce co-founded Time magazine alongside Briton Hadden.

Luce was born in Penglai, Shandong, China on April 3, 1898. In China, he attended various Chinese and English boarding schools. At age 15, he traveled to Connecticut, where he first met Briton Hadden. They both then went off to study at Yale College. Afterward, Henry embarked on post-graduate studies at Oxford University.
