Markus gained a law degree from the University of Hull, and an MA in Human Resources Management from the University of Canterbury. He holds numerous licenses for the practice and delivery of management tools and psychometric evaluations, as well as holding FCIPD and FCMI designations.
Mark Starmer is a lifelong career adult development professional, with nearly 40 years of experience, who has spent the past 25 years specializing in ‘real’ leadership development.
Having originally trained as a lawyer, Markus discovered a passion for adult learning and acquired extensive experience in creating and delivering a full range of personal and management skills training, predominantly in the financial services sector. He went on to hold the most senior global HR development role within global banking giant HSBC and has personally trained the last 4 CEOs.
Markus wrote the UK business bestseller ‘Will the Real Leader Please Stand Up?’ and founded and ran two highly successful international businesses. He has experience in almost the entire spectrum of HR practice, gained in 58 countries on 4 continents. His accomplishments include delivering numerous conference keynotes; turning round toxic business cultures; designing uniquely effective retention and people development strategies; healing countless fractured business teams; developing and leading global, cross cultural learning initiatives; coaching senior business executives, politicians and even media personalities; and acting as an advisor to the UK Government on national leadership development initiatives.
Outside of work
Markus is Chairman of the Piece of Heaven Project, one of BC’s largest farm animal sanctuaries, and an active environmental advocate. In the limited amount of free time he has, he is an avid film buff and wine enthusiast.
