Financial Modeling Competition - Winners

How Does This Competition Work?

This unique financial modeling competition launches with the release of a case study containing detailed financial information about a company. All of the participants are then tasked with building a valuation model in Excel from scratch (or with a template), based on the information provided, and must arrive at a valuation for the business. Consequently, participants are required to submit a pitchbook that will summarize all of the data, outputs, and recommendations.

Contestants will have 1 week to build their model, determine a valuation, and present their findings.

How Are Winners Determined?

CFI’s panel of judges will determine the winners based on the following categories:

Investment Rationale and Strategy – Clarity of investment rationale and strategy.

Drivers & Assumptions – Clarity and quality of the entire model, including assumptions, logic, market sizing, and drivers.

Target Model – Linking and accuracy of calculations as well as a reasonable valuation range.

Pro Forma Model – Linking and accuracy of calculations for all forecasted items as well as synergies in the financial model.

Valuation and Deal Mix – Final risk-weighted value is within a reasonable range, clearly explained, and the deal mix is aligned with the acquirer’s objectives.

Formatting – Accurate use of best practices and easy to follow aesthetic model/pitchbook.

Sensitivity and Accretion Analysis – Effectiveness of sensitivity and accretion/dilution analyses under different scenarios.

Investment Presentation Slide Deck – Quality of recommendations, key takeaways, and the presentation of outputs including charts and graphs.

Presentation Recording – Professionalism, flow, and clarity of the pitch.

What Is the 2021 Global Financial Modeling Competition Topic?

The 2021 Financial Modeling Competition topic is to be determined.

What Was the 2020 Global Financial Modeling Competition?

The 2020 Financial Modeling Competition was an M&A case. Participants had to decide which target company (out of the three mentioned in the case) would best align with Coca-Cola’s future. After deciding on various deal mixes and which target would be the most accretive, participants presented their findings.

What Was the 2019 Global Financial Modeling Competition?

In the 2019 Global Financial Modeling Competition, competitors were M&A Analysts at a major financial advisory firm, Consumers Capital Advisory, which specializes in providing large consumer companies with various financial services, including high-impact merger and acquisition transactional consulting. This CIM was prepared by Consumers Capital Advisory to provide data on potential target firms that Nestlé could acquire within different food & beverage markets.

Competitors were tasked to create the pro-forma M&A financial model for the acquirer (Nestlé) based on one of the suggested target companies, including pricing the pro-forma business and pitching the recommended M&A transaction.

  1. Download all files for the competition (CIM, Excel Data Files, PowerPoint Template).
  2. Read the CIM to determine your forecast assumptions and drivers based on industry growth, Management’s Discussion and Analysis, and other provided information.
  3. Build a financial model and determine the intrinsic value of the company, and an illustrative internal rate of return (IRR) at different prices and under different scenarios.
  4. Build a short presentation on the investment opportunity – summarize your financial model (assumptions, financial forecast, valuation, etc.) and provide a recommendation.
  5. Record a quick 5-minute video presentation (screen recording) of your analysis.
