What is an Aptitude Test?

The test is standardized and is used to examine certain skills of the applicant, which are ranked based on a scoring system; hence, they allow organizations to quantify and compare aptitude tests with other candidates.
A situational judgment is a specific career aptitude test that helps the human resource department predict how an employee will react to a specific situation in the workplace. They are used to assess an employee’s ability to manage stress, communication skills, and emotional intelligence.
In recent years, emotional intelligence’s been labeled as one of the most important skills that an employee can possess. Emotional intelligence is the ability of an individual to recognize their emotions and the emotions of others.
2. Educational tests
An educational aptitude test is provided by some schools to students at the start of elementary school to measure a student’s intelligence and mastery of academics. Along with measuring intelligence and academics mastery, an educational aptitude test can determine the placement of gifted and talented students in certain educational programs. For example, a modern numerical aptitude test measures a student’s ability to successfully navigate through a numerical problem set.
Aptitude tests also determine if a student should be placed in special education. For high school students, the tests are used to understand various aspects of a student’s development.
Furthermore, a guidance counselor will give students an aptitude test to help them choose their college major and specialization. For example, students that score well in the creativity section will be encouraged to take visual arts courses in college.
On the other hand, students that score well in the numerical section of the aptitude test and demonstrate the ability to solve numerical problems with accuracy and speed are encouraged to take accounting and finance courses in college.
Advantages of Aptitude Tests

Disadvantages of Aptitude Tests
1. Test anxiety
Many candidates experience anxiety before tests, which can cause stress and turn into psychosomatic illnesses. The symptoms of the illness include increased blood pressure, dizziness, and shortness of breath. The physical and mental symptoms of stress can hinder an individual’s ability to perform on an aptitude test.
2. Incomplete assessment
An aptitude test does not paint the full picture: just because a candidate does well on the aptitude test does not mean they will perform well in the real world when a particular situation arises.
3. No consideration of soft skills
Aptitude tests are designed in a certain manner that prevents a candidate from demonstrating their soft skills, and soft skills are an equally important part of a successful candidate.
