What is e.g.?

E.g. comes from the Latin abbreviation of “exempli gratia,” which means “for example.” It is usually used after a definition to give an applied example or illustration of the definition. It is closely related to i.e., which is the Latin abbreviation of “id est,” which means “in other words.” They are probably two of the favorite abbreviations of academics, as they are widely used in education.
